When Jesse had seen the letter in the mail, he'd considered throwing it out without opening it. It probably would have been the smart thing to do- but he would have had to at least shred it, God only knows what information she might have put in there. But the curiosity would have killed him. And so he'd opened the letter from Skyler on his break and read it, and had gotten as angry as he could remember being in months. She might have pitied him when they first met, but it was obvious she did now- just for way different reasons. The thought of going home and looking at Mr. White after thinking about the shit in that letter was unbearable at first, and so he'd done something he hadn't done for a while. He'd gone to a bar, and taken the bus home. Once the bartender had kicked him out.

Walt had barely noticed the time- he'd been busy trying to set up all his materials for the gem synthesis, but when he did he realized that Jesse was a little late. It wasn't something new, and he wasn't very late, so Walt didn't let himself get worried just yet. He stretched, arching his arms up over his head, then headed back into the living room to wait. Maybe the television could help pass the time.

Jesse leaned against the door for a moment, letting out a slow breath, then fumbled out his keys. People talked about being a happy drunk or a sad drunk, but in his experience, being drunk just made you more of whatever you happened to be. Which right now, was pissed. He shoved the key in the door and turned it, then opened the door, taking a few unsteady steps inside before slamming the door and throwing the lock closed.

Walt heard the door and raised his eyebrow, setting the remote down on the coffee table. Since he slammed it, he figured that Jesse was in a bad mood. Maybe something happened at work. He stood up, taking a step toward the hallway. "Hey, did something happen at work today?"

Jesse didn't answer, stalking past him into the living room, kicking off his shoes. He briefly considered throwing them, then just tossed his jacket onto a nearby chair. "Why didn't you ever divorce her?" he demanded, words obviously slurred.

He stopped, obviously thrown off by the question, then he shook his head, narrowing his eyes at him. "Are you drunk? Did you drive back here drunk?! Are you insane!? You could have been arrested, or worse- crashed and killed yourself-"

"I took the fucking bus, I'm not fucking stupid!" Jesse threw his hands up. "Don't- just answer th' fucking question! Why didn't you ever divorce the bitch, huh? You got an explanation for that?"

Walt stared at him for a moment, then shook his head again, taking a step closer to him. "Where is all of this coming from? Why are you drunk?"

"Fine, don't bother answering me!" Jesse took a step back, settling into a pace across the floor. "I know why- you were just-" He paused, then looked up at him, eyes narrowed. "Because the bitch sent me a LETTER, that's why, a letter in my goddamn mailbox, four fucking pages long! So I'm drunk! Change the subject!"

"A letter...? Why would she send you a letter?" Walt moved over to the couch and sat down, leaning his elbows on his knees. "I can imagine what she said in it." He looked up at Jesse.

Jesse snorted. "Yeah, I bet you can." He crossed his arms, not sitting. "I bet- you can always figure it out, right? Because you know everything about her, don't you?"

"I didn't divorce her because at the time I was trying to repair my family, Jesse. That's why." He spread his hands. "I refused to sign the papers when she brought them to me."

"Repair your family. Yeah, you were sure worried about that later." He narrowed his eyes. "I know that. I didn't mean at the beginning- I don't give a shit about that- I mean later. I mean- I mean when neither of you could fucking stand each other. Don't even lie to me and say you thought there was a chance. No-" He stabbed a finger in his direction. "You were trying to keep her under your goddamn thumb, attached to you-"

"Not long before my 'death', we were attempting to put our lives back together. And for a brief period, it seemed like everything was back to normal, you know? Of course, everything blew up in my face, you know how all of that went." Walt looked down at his hands. "I wanted to do it for Junior, and for Holly. I couldn't stand the thought of her taking them away from me..."

"Stop fucking lying to me!" Jesse threw his hands up. "Stop acting like such a goddamn martyr! You're acting like I wasn't fucking there, like I don't know-" He paused, then took a step towards him, jaw lifting in an accusing slant. "She told me, y'know, in that letter- a lot of shit. Before all this went down." He laughed shortly, humorlessly. "Hell- probably some of it before I was born."

Walt looked up at him. "So what did she say?"

"She said you picked her up when she was a waitress in some café." Jesse crossed his arms. "And that before that, you were dating one of the partners from that business you got screwed out of."

Walt nodded, watching him. "At least that much is true. But... is that cause for you to go out and get drunk?"

Jesse set his jaw. "...Shut the fuck up and let me talk for once."

He held his hands up and sat back, quiet.

"She said she had a conversation with this chick, Gretchen." Jesse stared at him. "She said... she never really understood why you dumped her- you just walked out during a trip you were taking, when she told you her parents owned the resort you were staying at."

Walt took a slow breath, jaw tensing a little, but he kept quiet.

Jesse squatted down a little, then sat on the edge of the coffee table, staring him in the eye. "...I know why," he said. "Do you?"

Walt looked back at him. "Tell me why then, Jesse."

He leaned his elbows on his knees, leaning forward. "She had her own money," he enunciated, eyes a little unfocused from the alcohol but locked on him. "She didn't need you."
